Depression
“There is good evidence that psychiatric illness is associated
with depletion of [Omega-3] and, crucially, that supplementation can result in clinical
amelioration.”
Hallahan, B., & Garland,
M.R. British J Psych 2005;186:275-277.
“...reduced membrane DHA emerged
as a significant predictor of depression...”
Edwards, R., et al.
J Affect Disord1998; 48:149–155.
Postpartum–“…lower
DHA content in mothers’ milk…[was] associated with higher rates of postpartum depression.”
Hibbeln, J.R. J Affect Disord 2002;69:15-29.
“Trials have shown
that folate supplementation hastens recovery from depressive episodes and enhances
the effect of antidepressants.”
Morris, M.S., et al. Psychother and Psychosom 2003;72(2):80-7.
Omega-3
“Depleted RBC membrane [Omega-3] levels
showed a significant association with the severity of depression, such that the
lowest levels were associated with more severe depression.” *
Edwards, R., et al. J Affect Disord 1998;48:149–155.
B Vitamins
“There is now substantial evidence of a
common decrease in serum/red blood cell folate, serum vitamin B12 and an increase
in plasma homocysteine in depression.”

Coppen, A.,
and Bolander-Gouaille, C. J Psychopharm 2005;19:59–65.

*FDA “Qualified Health Claims” Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Coronary Heart Disease. Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. FDA evaluated the above claim and determined that, although there is scientific evidence supporting the claim, the evidence is not conclusive. As part of a well-balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, Folic Acid, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 may reduce the risk of vascular disease. FDA evaluated the above claim and found that, while it is known that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol reduce the risk of heart disease and other vascular diseases, the evidence in support of the above claim is inconclusive. Docket No. 99P-3029.
